A Look Within
This project delves into the intricate theme of estrangement through a unique perspective. Portraying individuals seeking a sense of belonging and comfort in unfamiliar environments, I wanted to explore the feelings of estrangement that I’ve had since moving here from England. I focussed on individuals who, like me, have come across to Belfast from other parts of the UK. My methodology looks at the inevitable alienation between the sitter and the environments in which they are located. Collectively, referring to cinematic and architectural imagery, focussing on the entryways into their homes.

I aim to showcase my fascination with the themes of estrangement, detachment, and isolation. The device of photographing subjects in their private spaces from the public is key to exploring the barriers represented by the gaze through the window. Through the juxtaposition of awkward poses and the metaphorical barrier of windows, the project seeks to convey the complexities of estrangement- capturing moments of vulnerability, separation, and longing.
